Chapter Twelve

Max

I spent hours attempting to track Luke down. I always considered myself to be an excellent researcher, but my skills weren’t helping at all today. I knew his decision was due to my presence at the firm, and I couldn’t get past the guilt I felt.

It sucked!

Ever since that moment in the hospital, I saw Luke differently. Up till then, it was just easier to consider him the sleazy playboy of the office, the rich asshole with no concern for anyone but himself. But now I knew that wasn’t true. He was so sick in the hospital. He couldv’e died. And it was that understanding that made it so difficult not to go to him.

He never mentioned our little interlude in Intensive Care or that I slept in his bed. I wondered if he even remembered it. He was pretty out of it at the time.

His compliment that night shocked me into tears. The emotion behind it. Then when he’d apologized after complimenting me so sweetly...that actually made me cry harder.

And after the way he’d spoken to me so earnestly up in my room Sunday, I knew these feelings weren’t just physical. He wasn’t looking for a quick bang with me, and yet we kept coming back to this painful realization that we couldn’t be together. But the look in his eyes. It wasn’t the kind of look you gave to someone you wanted to flirt with. It wasn’t the kind of look you gave to someone you wanted to have a fling with. It was far more powerful than that.

And it scared the hell out of me.

I called Luke’s phone at least a dozen times, and David called, texted and emailed him. It was obvious Luke did not want to be found.

But what upset me the most was this feeling I had in the pit of my stomach. Ever since that moment in my room, I had this awful fear that something bad would happen, that I wouldn’t see him again. It wasn’t logical or rational, but I couldn’t get away from it.

Finally, after a fruitless and frustrating morning, I realized I would get absolutely nothing accomplished work-wise today. I got up and went to Tori. I told her I was going on an errand, and that I would be back. Then, I gathered up my things and went to the one place that up till then, I never imagined I would go.

Luke’s apartment address wasn’t hard to find. David had it programmed into his GPS. One quick glance while he was on the office phone was all I needed. Once the taxi dropped me off, I hurried to the entrance, but it required a key or someone to buzz you in. I tried Luke’s intercom, but of course, he didn’t answer. I didn’t know if he didn’t want visitors or if he simply wasn’t there. I’d been sitting on the sun-warmed cement steps for about an hour when a very well-dressed blond man left, allowing me to sneak in.
